Book summary/point of view – 10 points

In about 100 words, provide a brief summary of the plot of the book. Include the time period in which it takes place.

This book is all about Grace Kelly’s life. So to start off the book it first tells me it all started in the late 1920s. She was born in The Hahnemann Medical College, in Philadelphia. From there she grew up in a more popular state in the U.S. She was baptized because she was a Roman Catholic. She has a big-ish family of six people. Three sisters, a brother, a father and mother. She grew up like any normal kid, she was in elementary school, junior high, and high school. Then, she became a theatre actress. She became very popular and directors find her from her dramas that she was in and want her to start acting. So get acts in movies and shows and gets a lot of awards. She meets this man that is the Prince of Monaco, Rainier lll. They get married and she becomes the Princess of Monaco. Then she later passed away because she had a stroke.

From whose point of view is the book told?  How does this influence the story?

The point of view the story was told is third person. This was a man that found all this information about Grace, but he also interviewed her to get most of the information to write this book. This influenced the story because this helped me see who she really was. I thought that he explained everything really well and I really enjoyed reading this book.

Application questions – 35 points

5 points each – each answer should be a minimum of 50 words)

What is the most important event in the book?  Why is it the most important? When does this event take place in the book (page numbers)?

I think that the most important part of this book is on page 56. On this page it says, “We’ve got a new girl in Washington I think she’s ours!” This part of the book is when she moved to Manhattan so she could start her acting career. I think that this was really important because it showed her that acting is something that she is really good at. She realized this when she was in drama, but was really put into effect when people wanted her to be in movies and TV shows.

Choose one character – Give a more detailed description of their role in the book, and then compare them to someone you know personally today.  Use two quotes from the book to help illustrate your description – cite page numbers where the quotes are found.

The character I would choose is Grace Kelly. Grace finds it easy to fit into social places, she works really hard, she has special strengths, she is 5’7”, bonde, happy, sweet, caring, and she is very wise. I think the person I would compare this to is Noel. She is all of the things I listed and more. “Everything has to be earned, through work, persistence, and honesty{pg. 71}.” “One needs to be alone, to recharge one’s batteries{pg. 178}.”

Use two quotes from the book to show new things you have learned about this time period in history.  Explain what each quote helped you to better know or understand – cite page numbers.

“Episodes of Profound depression were infrequent. But there were many periods of meleconly and loneliness(pg. 254).” This shows how people, like Grace, were hurt by pressure of the public. Most of the people at this time were hurt because of how they were very popular. “The French President was insisting upon cancelation of a 1951 convection governing French-Monegasque re;attions so that taxes could be levied against French residents in Monaco, and the revenue to be forwarded to Paris(pg. 25).” This relates to all the drama with the French and how they affected Monaco and how Monaco affected the French.

How might our world be different today if the historical events in your book had turned out differently?  Use two different examples to explain your answer.

I think that if we would have neer had a Grace Kelly then we wouldn’t have learned some life lessons. Grace made mistakes in her life and gave our great advice which is good. If we didn’t have her then people wouldn’t have got their entertainment from her. Then my last point is that she would have never been an amazing Princess of Monaco. Thes examples have affected the entertainment world and the world of royalty.

What are three life lessons that can be learned from this book – how does each apply to your life?

One life lesson I learned from this book could be that if you work hard towards  your dream you can achieve anything. I learned this from Grace because she was a very hard working woman. She was so successful and it shows me how I could be successful if I try my best and work hard. Another thing that I learned was that being a royal doesn’t mean anything except for a title. This can relate to me because everyone gets a title about something that they do and they can be good and bad titles, but if you don’t give it to yourself it’s your choice to use it or to discard it. Then the last life lesson I learned was to take chances because Grace took a lot of them. Grace took a lot of chances in her entertainment life and eventually suggested so taking risks can be very beneficial.

If you were to give this book an alternate title, what would it be?  Explain why.

“Avoid looking back, focus on what’s ahead.” I could rename it this because this was what Grace’s personality was like. She had a very famous quote that was almost just like this and how we should live in the present and not think about the past or the future, but to live who we are now. I also think that think really relates to me because of how we have to think about school for or future, but I just want to live for today.

Explain in about 50 words why you would or would not recommend this book to your classmates.

I think that I would recommend this book to people if they want to know more about how she came from a smaller town in a bigger state into becoming a big actress then a princess. I liked the book and thought the whole process was very interesting about how the entertainment world works. It had a lot of details and information, but if people don’t want to know all the details of Grace Kelly I would not recommend the book to them.
